Illustrated Lexicon
of Germanic Deities
Gunivortus Goos
Published by BoD, 2022
This lexicon contains in alphabetical order of their names information about ca. 290 deities, which in the
widest sense can be called Germanic. Taken in account for these entries are
- inscriptions from the Roman period (121), with illustrations, if available;
- names in texts of early medieval Scandinavian and Icelandic literature (118);
- other sorces (51)
In addition to existing descriptions of attributes, etymological analysis of the surviving name is
often used to try to infer the areas of power and responsibility, as well as the significance of
the deity in question.
The quality of the sources for it all varies greatly, all have their shortcomings and leave many questions unanswered.
Yet, the lexicon tries to present the gods and goddesses as unambiguously and critically as possible.
